About Gabriel Llompart & Jaume Riera

Gabriel Llompart i Moragues was born in Palma de Mallorca in 1927. He is a historian and an expert in Majorcan folklore. In 1947 he joined the Teatin Order. Father Llompart received a degree in theology and history from the University of Barcelona. His interest lies in Baleric archaelogy, iconography and religious folklore. He has been a member of the Societat Arqueològica Lul.liana, a branch of the IEC (Institute of Catalan Studies), since 1987. He is also a member of the Real Academia de la Hisotoria and of the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona. In 1989 he was part of the expert commission to decide the final design of the official flag of the Balearic Islands. Llompart has received numerous awards, including the Ramon Llull Prize (1997) and the Jaume II Prize from the Consell de Mallorca (2006).

Jaume Riera i Sans was born in Sant Feliu de Llobregat in 1941. He received a degree in Semitic Philology from the University of Barcelona summa cum laude in 1969. This same university awarded him a fellowship to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during the years 1969-1970. He served as Assistant Professor at the University of Barcelona from 1970-1979. In 1979 he joined the faculty body of Archivist and Librarians (ranking 1st in the entry exams). In 1983 he was detailed to the Archival of the Crown of Aragon where he still works as its secretary.

Riera obtained the "Nicolau d'Olwer" prize from the Institute of Catalan Studies in 1976 for his work "Noms i cognoms dels convesos jueus fins a 1412" ["names and last names of convert Jews until 1412"]. He served as first president of the Associació d’Estudiosos del Judaisme Català [Association of scholars of Catalan Judaism] funded in 1983. He directed the magazine Calls in its first three issues. He is a currently contributor to the Corpus Biblicum Catalanicum.

He has contributed over one hundred articles to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana [Great Catalan Encyclopedia] essentially covering all entries of Jewish writers living in the Catalan Countries. Riera has also contributed to the Indice Histórico Español [Spanish historical index], eleven articles to the Diccionari d’Història de Catalunya [Dictionary of the history of Catalonia] and to the Atles d’Història de Catalunya [Historical Atlas of Catalonia].

He has published numerous articles relating to the Catalan-speaking Jews of the middle ages living under the Crown of Aragon. These include the biography of Cresques Abraham, Jafudà Cresques [available on this site].

He is the author of numerous books: Cants de noces de jueus catalans (1974), La Crònica en hebreu de la Disputa de Tortosa (1974), El Siddur en català dels conversos jueus (Segle xv) (1991), Retalls de la Vida dels jueus (2000), Fam i Fe. L’Entrada dels Pastorells (juliol de 1320) (2004), Els Poders públics i les Sinagogues (Segles xiii-xv) (2006), and together with Eduard Feliu, els Poemes hebraics de jueus catalans (1976). Riera is also the author of the brochure Catalunya i els Jueus [Catalonia and the Jews] commissioned by the Department of Tourism of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1987).
